The Phil Cooperman Scholarship is dedicated to the memory of longtime FDU Professor of Mathematics Philip Cooperman (1918-1983).  This is a competitive award designed to support mathematics majors at the Fairleigh Dickinson University Metropolitan Campus who have a demonstrated track record of excellence in their course work, extracurricular activities, and commitment to the pursuit of mathematics as their future profession.

Scholarship winners will have a sum of $500 deposited to their FDU accounts. The scholarship will be awarded once per year.  Students can apply in multiple years, and are eligible to receive the award more than once.

Application Requirements and Information to Submit

To be eligible for the Phil Cooperman Scholarship, you must be a mathematics major at the Metropolitan Campus.  Preference will be given on the basis of scholastic achievement, involvement in math-related activities, and your stated commitment to the field of mathematics. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in your mathematics courses is required to apply. A minimum GPA of 3.0 in your mathematics courses and completion of the calculus sequence is required to apply. In the event that none of the applications meet the high standards of this scholarship, then no awards will be given during that academic year.

Please be aware that all application materials must be submitted electronically.

  • Current curriculum vitae:  Your CV should contain your name, address, telephone number, email address, your major and class rank, and all the other biographical information typically contained in a CV.  Be sure to include all of your math-related activities (for example, participation in the FDU Math Club, publications, conferences attended, math SAT tutoring, etc.).
  • College transcripts:  If you need to scan your transcripts and do not have access to a scanner, then please go to the main office in Becton 300 for assistance.
  • Personal statement:  Include a personal statement, no longer than 2 pages in length (double spaced, 12 point font, half inch margins), describing your future plans and the role that your math studies will play.  Feel free to include any information that you think persuasively communicates your personal interest and achievements in mathematics.

Scholarship recipients will be sent an award letter and certificate, and $500 will automatically be deposited into their FDU accounts.
